10 Year Celebrations

Hi Everyone
This year Yarrilee State School is 10 years old. It is hard to believe that we have reached this milestone already. Celebrations are planned for Week 4 of Term 4 with a range of things timetabled throughout the week. We urge all members of our school community to participate in some way to celebrate the great things we have achieved in this time. We especially urge you to visit your child’s class on our Open Day where you can experience first hand the learning that happens each day in classrooms across the school. Programs will appear in the newsletter and on the website. Watch this space for more details.
Enjoy your holidays with your children.
Cheers

Fire and Rain Concert

Last Friday we raised the roof on the Assembly area with our rock concert to raise funds for the Victorian bushfire and Queensland flood victims. Staff joined with past and present students to form a rock band which entertained over 800 students and parents. It was a privilege to be part of such a great school community occasion where everyone there wanted to make a difference to the lives of those Australians who are suffering. I was also very proud of our student leaders and staff who had worked tirelessly in the days leading up to the event to ensure everything ran smoothly.

On Friday we also celebrated the induction of our 2009 student leaders. Lars Olsen, founder of “Forget Me Not” orphanage in Nepal was our special guest and presented the students with their badges. Lars shared his thoughts on leadership with all students on Assembly, encouraging them to take on leadership opportunities and make a difference.

This week we will refocus on our environment by participating in Clean Up Australia Day for schools on Friday and our very own version of Earth Hour also on Friday. Parents are welcome to join us again this week.

Welcome to 2009 at Yarrilee

Hello Everyone
Welcome back to all of our Yarrilee families and a very warm welcome to all of the new families who have joined us for the first time this year.
We have had a wonderful start to the year and look forward to the great experinces and learnings your children will be offered. I thank all families for ensuring that your children were well prepared to start the school year and to the staff for ensuring that the commencement of the school year has been very smooth and productive.
This year I will be responsible for the Middle and Senior School and in visiting those classrooms in the last week, I have been most impressed with the attitude, application and behaviour of all of our students. The curriculum programs for the start of the year have focussed on health and personal development where students have the opportunity to reflect on their own health and well being and building those productive friendships and partnerships inside and outside the classroom. Literacy blocks began across the school this week with each classroom being supported with an extra staff member to enhance learning opportunities. We would love to have some extra parent helpers to support in this area also. Please see your child’s teacher if you are able to assist.
I encourage all parents to attend our parent information sessions this week and next so you are well aware of how each of the Mini Schools operates.
Looking forward to meeting everyone there.
Cheers
Anne

Early Learners Open Day

Tomorrow, we welcome to our school parents who are enrolling their children in Prep or Year 1 for 2009. During the morning session, we will conduct tours of the school and families will be able to visit and spend some time in Early Learners’ classrooms.
Families who are unable to make it tomorrow, can make arrangements to visit at another time.
On 13 November we will also be conducting an Early Learners’ Information Evening for parents to share some information about our school that will ensure the transition to the early years of school is very smooth and a great experience for all. Please contact the school if you require further information on this or you wish to RSVP.
I look forward to meeting lots of new parents at each of these events.

Kind Regards
Anne Greiner

Junior Sports

This week our Early Learners and Junior School students are enjoying their Junior Sports. At these carnivals, we host students from three neighbouring primary schools and the students enjoy six different activities where the focus is on maximum participation rather than competition.
Year 3 students participated today with Year 2 tomorrow and Prep/One on Thursday. Parents are most welcome to attend and support the students in this fantastic activity. I thank Miss Henderson for the very thorough organisation of these carnivals.
Tomorrow, Senior School students in Year 7 will receive a visit from representatives of Urangan State High School to discuss transition to secondary school. There will be follow up parent sessions in the future and students will have the opportunity to spend time at the school. Hervey Bay State High School personnel will also visit in the near future. It is important that families take the opportunity to be well informed when making these important decisions. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is any way in which we can assist.

New Music Block

Yesterday we saw the builders’ safety fences erected on the site for our new purpose built music block. It is exciting to think that we will finally have a facility specifically designed to cater for classroom music, instrumental music, rehearsals and recording. Our music staff are really looking forward to the start of 2009 when we should be enjoying everything this facility has to offer.
While the building takes place, we have had to rearrange the assembly of our bus students. To assist with this we now have Senior School Bus Leaders who will assist teachers with the supervision and movement of younger students. We congratulate these students on the commitment they have made to this leadership role.
Cheers

National Tree Day

In between the showers of rain last Friday, we took the opportunity to enhance our lovely environment by planting some trees on National Tree Day for schools. Some of our Prep students along with Senior School assistants and under the guidance of Mr Edwards (our Schools Officer - Facilities) planted a significant number of native trees.
We really appreciate this generous donation from Jack Casey Toyota. Our students look forward to nurturing these new additions to our physical environment.
Cheers

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all of those families who took advantage of the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their teachers tonight. This very valuable communication ensures the best outcomes for your children. It is great to see parents working closely in partnership with teachers.
I would also like to thank the very committed teaching staff for the time they have spent completing these interviews after a very long wet day at school.
Cheers

What a great effort!

The grey skies and clouds may have been imminent, but there was still plenty of spirit at our annual Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to all students who participated and tried their best in all they attempted. Our overall winning house was Water and the age championships were all closely contested. The winners of these were announced today and they will receive their medallions on Assembly next week. Parents are invited to join us for this presentation. We also congratulate the winners of the Hodge Shield for their “spirit” showing persistence, determination and sportsmanship. They will also be presented with their medallions on Tuesday.
Students who achieved well will compete at the Zone Athletics Carnival on Friday 1 August. We wish them well.

Welcome to our new term!

Welcome back for Term 3 with a special welcome to all of our new families to Yarrilee. We trust that the first week has seen your children settle in well. If there is anything you are unsure about, please ask your child’s teacher or our office staff so that you have a clear understanding of how our school operates.
All Mini Schools are beginning new units of work and I must say there are some exciting times ahead:
Early Learners – “From Farm to Fork”
Junior School – “Yarrilee Dreaming” / “Back to the Future”
Middle School – “The Olympics - One World, One Dream”/ “Water Works”
Senior School – “Take a Risk – Think Outside the Square”

We look forward to some great outcomes for our students from these units of study.

Teachers and teacher aides spent part of Monday involved in professional learning in the curriculum area with specific reference to the new Essential Learnings being introduced in 2009 which will underpin our units of work.

Have a chat with your children about their units of work.
Regards
Anne
